(Hear me out)

Releasing my inner centrist with this one.

To massively over simplify, humanities history has been violent. We are a species that murdered, pillaged, and destroyed each other for the simple goal of owning ‘stuff’. The history of European empires to Chinese dynasties is almost exclusively of how they caused harm and suffering among their citizens. The 19th and 20th century can almost exclusively be summed up by “a lot of people died”.

So when you think about the fact that the UN even managed to exist in the first place, it kinda amazes you. In the 1800s the idea that all nations should be working together to achieve a common goal was laughable, “could never happen”, “wouldn’t work” they would probably say. And yet, after WW2, people thought it might just work, so they tried, and you know what, it’s done a whole lot better than if it didn’t exist. Almost every sovereign nation in existence today (barring some special circumstances, looking at you Taiwan) signed up, even if purely on paper, to try and make things better is honestly pretty cool. While this is very liberal of me and yes the UN nowadays is basically useless, the fact that leaders of nations decided to try, to attempt to make the world a better place, is still pretty amazing, and I think we should remember that a lot more when talking about world government. What we have right now isn’t enough, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing.
